An Introduction to Steel Fabrication

Steel fabrication is a process of transforming basic steel portions into predefined shapes and is often done after steel detailing and drafting. The drafting and drawing section are required to present a proposed design that fabricators craft and bring to life. Steel fabrication requires good attention to detail and extensive knowledge of steel properties. It involves a variety of manipulation techniques, such as shot blasting, bending, cutting, welding, and coating.

Because it is affordable and highly durable, steel has been used in many construction projects. Some houses, offices, and workshops are constructed with prefabricated structures made from stainless steel and carbon. These structures can be rapidly disassembled and assembled to meet operational needs. Currently, many gas and liquid pipes, as well as large structures such as skyscraper, bridges, stadium, and many other architectural projects, make extensive use of fabricated steel.

A Certified Transportation Broker (CTB) since 2004 from Houston, Texas, Stephen Day of LGI is a member of several professional organizations, including the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA).

TIA promotes the interests of third-party logistics companies and professionals who are committed to advancing industry standards and business practices. TIA offers the Certified Transportation Broker (CTB) program, which is designed to help professionals enhance their business acumen and skills in sales and operational management.

Accessible online, the CTB curriculum includes lectures on general business principles such as accounting, finance, marketing, and risk management. The curriculum also delves into traffic management and shared best practices in processing claims and shipments.

Through the program, participants gain an understanding of industry regulations and become familiar with case law that tackles Workers’ Compensation and other issues that can arise in their business.

A native of Baytown, Texas, Stephen Patrick Day attended Robert E. Lee High School and Lee College before embarking on a career in the transportation and logistics industry that has spanned more than two decades. After spending five years as a partner with RLS International Transport in Houston, Stephen Patrick Day formed Logistics Group International, Inc. (LGI), as president and CEO in 2002 and, seven years later, formed LGI Transport, LLC. The companies offer a range of transportation services, including heavy haul, heavy lift, cross border shipping, truckload & LTL freight arrangement, warehousing & project management.

Mr. Day has earned designation as a Certified Transportation Broker (CTB) and a proud member of the Diamond Broker program considered “ Best in Class” for performance, credit & bonding requirements. He stays current with best practices in the trucking and logistics field through his membership in the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) and Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SCRA), and he shares ideas and experiences with fellow business leaders as a member of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO).

In addition to his work in the logistics and transportation field, Mr. Day lends his business leadership skills to Petro Wire & Steel, Inc. As a partner in the Houston-based company, he helps direct one of the region’s premier distributor of custom steel fabrications, wire cloth & perforated metal. The firm’s client base includes companies in the petrochemical, agricultural, and mining industries, among others.
